Hugh the Hibernian is an Irish fairy (more popularly known as a leprechaun) and the first in my series of patterns for making wee folk. Perfect to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, springtime, or any time you’re looking to make a dapper little fella in a top hat. Also included in the pattern are instructions for making Hugh’s pot of gold, in case he feels inclined to hide one at the end of a rainbow.

Hibernian Hugh is 5 inches tall and would be a great pattern for a confident beginner to try. He is made entirely of single crochets – his body and hat are worked in rounds and his beard is worked flat. The pot of gold is a little bit more fiddly – made wholly in the round in single crochet (aside from 4 bobble stitches) – but the top of the pot is worked using a combination of single crochet rounds in front loops, back loops and both loops.
