Progress over perfection - how simple projects like granny squares help us let go of maladaptive perfectionism

August 15th is Granny Square Day so what better day to share an updated FREE granny square crochet pattern, together with a granny square video tutorial, that also doubles as a guided crochet meditation on letting go?

For me, practically every day is Granny Square Day. Grannies are perfect mindful crochet projects. Once you understand how to make them, then you don't need to follow a pattern. The simplicity of a granny square lends itself to a relaxing, meditative crochet experience.

If you're a crochet beginner and new to granny squares then I'd recommend starting with this video, Classic Granny Square Pattern - How to read crochet charts and patterns which accompanies my free Classic Granny Square crochet pattern.

For confident beginners or more experienced crocheters, then you can download this additional, updated FREE granny square crochet pattern PDF to make an alternate granny square which you can use for a granny square washcloth or for other homewares like coasters. I made some washcloths for the holidays last year and used them to wrap small gifts.

Here's the video that goes with the alternate granny square pattern:

I have updated the pattern to add:

  • a chart for the alternate granny square
  • YouTube links and
  • written instructions for a 3rd decorative border. The written pattern now includes instructions for adding a shell stitch edging, a V-stitch edging and a crab stitch (reverse single crochet) border.

Enjoy!
