Beginners don't need to have mastered the magic circle before crocheting this cute little tree but will need to know how to chain, work into a foundation chain, as well as the single crochet and half double crochet stitches. Tinsel has been made using the crossed single crochet (x-sc) stitch but you can use a regular single crochet instead.

Zest for Life lemon peel crochet stitch headband and earwarmer
A headband is often someone's first crochet project - working double crochet back and forth in rows is good practice but the fabric it creates tends to be quite "holey". The lemon peel stitch is easy, works up fast, allows a beginner to practice both single and double crochet and creates a stretchy, warm fabric with both visual and tangible texture. The pattern includes step-by-step instructions with photos for sewing the headband together to create the X-shaped twist at the front. As a bonus, this video is also a tutorial for the lemon peel crochet stitch and a hands on, crochet along, guided meditation
To complete this pattern you’ll need:
- DK or worsted weight yarn
- 5mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Beardsley the woodland gnome
This little gnome is rarely seen by people because he spends daylight hours underground. As his pale skin and large eyes attest, Beardsley ventures outside into the woods only at night time.
Beardsley is one of the first amigurumi I designed. I have always found trouble finding patterns for the kind of amigurumi I enjoy making - small creatures with a simple aesthetic focused on capturing the essence of a character rather than an accurate recreation or depiction of one. I like seamless amigurumi with as little sewing as possible.
Beardsley is the perfect small amigurumi pattern for crochet beginners - he's made with single crochet in the round (for the body and hat) and in rows (for the beard). His little ears are made using a bobble stitch but full instructions for the two bobble stitches are included in the pattern.
To complete this pattern, you’ll need:
- DK weight yarn in blue, red, white and skin tone.
- Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook
- 9mm black safety eyes
- polyester (or other) stuffing
- yarn needle
Tomte (Nisse) and gift box
Often referred to as Christmas Gnomes, Tomte (in Sweden) and Nisse (in Norway) aren't actually gnomes but according to Scandinavian tradition, tiny men who come bearing gifts. If you're not familiar with these figures from Nordic folklore then don't let their apparent generosity lull you into a false sense of security, these little dudes expect to be rewarded with porridge and if they don't get it, bad things happen!
Modified from my pattern for Beardsley, I don't recommend this project for beginner crocheters because he's much smaller (only 3 inches). For more confident crocheters though, his design is not complex, he's made with single crochet in the round (for the body and hat) and single crochet in rows (for the beard). His little ears are made using a bobble stitch but full instructions for the two bobble stitches are included in the pattern.
Instructions to make the gift box are also included in the pattern - it's seamless but constructed in a way that reinforces its cube shape. It's all single crochet in the round but you have to be comfortable with stitch and fabric anatomy as you will be crocheting rows together. The "ribbon" around the gift box is surface crocheted slip stitches.
To complete this pattern, you’ll need:
- DK weight yarn in your choice of colours (I used grey, skin tone, red, white and green)
- Size D (3.25mm) crochet hook
- 6mm black safety eyes
- polyester (or other) stuffing
- yarn needle
