Bunny from a crochet square
This bunny is a great project for a beginner who wants to practice working in rows of single crochet but doesn’t want to make a scarf or a blanket. It’s a quick, fun project that can be completed relatively quickly.
It's also a perfect, simple project for kids learning to crochet - they get the satisfaction of making something in a short period of time and best of all - it’s a cute bunny!

To complete this project you’ll need:
- 5.0 mm crochet hook (see notes in pattern)
- Locking stitch markers
- 9.0 mm safety eyes (or buttons or fabric, whichever you choose)
- Polyester filling or other stuffing
- Yarn needle
- Small amount of DK weight black yarn for mouth
- Mini pom pom maker or fork for making the pom pom tail. Tail may be made completely of MC, or in a mixture of MC and white, or completely white.
Beardsley the woodland gnome
This little gnome is rarely seen by people because he spends daylight hours underground. As his pale skin and large eyes attest, Beardsley ventures outside into the woods only at night time.
He is the perfect small amigurumi pattern for beginners - he's made with single crochet in the round (for the body and hat) and in rows (for the beard). His little ears are made using a bobble stitch but full instructions for the two bobble stitches are included in the pattern. He also makes a terrific Tomte if you're looking for a holiday gnome.
To complete this pattern, you’ll need:
- DK weight yarn in blue, red, white and skin tone.
- Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook
- 9mm black safety eyes
- polyester stuffing
- Tapestry needle
Chocolate Holiday Kisses
Terrific for busting stash as it only uses up a small amount of yarn, this kiss can be made as a stocking stuffer, teacher gift or hanging ornament.
To complete this pattern you’ll need:
- Sport/DK weight yarn in your colour of choice and white.
- Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
- 7.5mm black safety eyes
- Polyester stuffing
- Tapestry needle
This pattern is short and straightforward: single crochet in the round, increases and decreases.
Seamus the Pumpkin
I designed this pumpkin a couple of years ago. Back then, even though there were seemingly endless pumpkin patterns out there, I couldn't find one that was both creepy and cute, or one where the indents in the gourd were not made by tying threads around the outside.
Included with the pattern is a copy of my story, The Legend of Stingy Jack o' the lantern, a retelling of an Irish folklore legend regarding the origin of making jack o'lanterns for Halloween.
To complete this pattern you’ll need:
- Worsted weight yarn in orange, green, brown and white
- Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
- 12 mm black safety eyes
- Polyester (or other) stuffing
- Yarn needle
This pattern is fiddly in places and I wouldn't recommend it for absolute beginners.
Amigurumi ball
Perfect for absolute beginners, a sphere is a basic shape that you would need to master for many amigurumi designs and it's easy to modify to whip up a quick Christmas ornament.
To complete this pattern you’ll need:
- Worsted weight yarn
- A 5mm or 4mm crochet hook. In the video that accompanies this pattern I used a 5mm hook, which is the size I recommend for beginners. For the Christmas ornament I used a 4mm hook
- 9 mm black safety eyes
- Locking stitch markers
- Polyester (or other) stuffing
- Yarn needle
