Bunny from a crochet square

This bunny is a great project for a beginner who wants to practice working in rows of single crochet but doesn’t want to make a scarf or a blanket. It’s a quick, fun project that can be completed relatively quickly.

It's also a perfect, simple project for kids learning to crochet - they get the satisfaction of making something in a short period of time and best of all - it’s a cute bunny!

This pattern comes with a free walk through tutorial on YouTube

To complete this project you’ll need:

    Amigurumi ball

Perfect for absolute beginners, a sphere is a basic shape that you would need to master for many amigurumi designs and it's easy to modify to whip up a quick Christmas ornament.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • A 5mm or 4mm crochet hook. In the video that accompanies this pattern I used a 5mm hook, which is the size I recommend for beginners. For the Christmas ornament I used a 4mm hook
    • 9 mm black safety eyes
    • Locking stitch markers
    • Polyester (or other) stuffing
    • Yarn needle

Granny square gift wrap and dishcloth

How's this for a multi-purpose crochet project? Learn (or practice) making a granny square using this free pattern. Then use the granny square as eco-friendly gift wrapping that the gift recipient can reuse as a place mat, table centrepiece or, if you make it with cotton, it can be used as a dishcloth or washcloth. Includes a chart for the granny square plus written instructions for 3 types of decorative border - shell stitch, V-stitch and crab stitch.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

Mug rug crochet pattern - 3 different looks, all single crochet

This is a a free, 3-in-one mug rug crochet pattern. All three versions of this mug rug are made with single crochet. There's written instructions for regular single crochet for beginners, or for more experienced crocheters who like the look of single crochet in rows. For intermediate crocheters who want something that looks a little different there are written instructions for a crossed single crochet option and one that alternates back and front loop only single crochet.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • 5mm crochet hook
    • Yarn needle

Granny star gift tag and ornament

As this Granny star crochet pattern demonstrates, the granny stitch isn't just for squares. Even beginners will find this granny star a quick and easy crochet project. Make them to use as gift tags which the recipient can then keep and use every year as a Christmas ornament.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • 3.75mm crochet hook
    • Yarn needle

    Tinsel the Xmas tree

Beginners don't need to have mastered the magic circle before crocheting this cute little tree but will need to know how to chain, work into a foundation chain, as well as the single crochet and half double crochet stitches. Tinsel has been made using the crossed single crochet (x-sc) stitch but you can use a regular single crochet instead.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • A 5mm or 3.75mm crochet hook. I recommend beginners use a 5mm crochet hook but for the example shown I used a 3.75mm
    • 7.5mm black safety eyes
    • Locking stitch markers
    • Polyester (or other) stuffing
    • Yarn needle
    • Beads as ornaments (optional)

    Granny triangle Xmas tree

If you're looking for a flat Christmas tree crochet pattern that isn't an amigurumi tree like Tinsel, then this vintage-feel Granny triangle tree pattern is perfect! Make holiday bunting, a hanging ornament, a gift tag, a bookmark or an appliqué, there's so many uses for this little granny tree!

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Worsted weight yarn
    • A 5mm or 3.75mm crochet hook. I recommend beginners use a 5mm crochet hook but for the example shown I used a 3.75mm
    • Locking stitch markers
    • Yarn needle

    Granny hexagon hot pad

Both decorative and useful, these hot pads work up fast when you use bulky yarn. I made mine in a cool, winter blue but I think these would look gorgeous on the dinner table, ready to serve your holiday feast on.

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • Bulky weight yarn - the perfect yarn for this project is Bernat Maker Home Dec
    • 6.0mm crochet hook
    • Yarn needle

Zest for Life lemon peel crochet stitch headband and earwarmer

A headband is often someone's first crochet project - working double crochet back and forth in rows is good practice but the fabric it creates tends to be quite "holey". The lemon peel stitch is easy, works up fast, allows a beginner to practice both single and double crochet and creates a stretchy, warm fabric with both visual and tangible texture. The pattern includes step-by-step instructions with photos for sewing the headband together to create the X-shaped twist at the front. As a bonus, this video is also a tutorial for the lemon peel crochet stitch and a hands on, crochet along, guided meditation

To complete this pattern you’ll need:

    • DK or worsted weight yarn
    • 5mm crochet hook
    • Yarn needle

    Beardsley the woodland gnome

This little gnome is rarely seen by people because he spends daylight hours underground. As his pale skin and large eyes attest, Beardsley ventures outside into the woods only at night time.

Beardsley is one of the first amigurumi I designed. I have always found trouble finding patterns for the kind of amigurumi I enjoy making - small creatures with a simple aesthetic focused on capturing the essence of a character rather than an accurate recreation or depiction of one. I like seamless amigurumi with as little sewing as possible.

Beardsley is the perfect small amigurumi pattern for crochet beginners - he's made with single crochet in the round (for the body and hat) and in rows (for the beard). His little ears are made using a bobble stitch but full instructions for the two bobble stitches are included in the pattern.

To complete this pattern, you’ll need:

    • DK weight yarn in blue, red, white and skin tone.
    • Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook
    • 9mm black safety eyes
    • polyester (or other) stuffing
    • yarn needle

    Tomte (Nisse) and gift box

Often referred to as Christmas Gnomes, Tomte (in Sweden) and Nisse (in Norway) aren't actually gnomes but according to Scandinavian tradition, tiny men who come bearing gifts. If you're not familiar with these figures from Nordic folklore then don't let their apparent generosity lull you into a false sense of security, these little dudes expect to be rewarded with porridge and if they don't get it, bad things happen!

Modified from my pattern for Beardsley, I don't recommend this project for beginner crocheters because he's much smaller (only 3 inches). For more confident crocheters though, his design is not complex, he's made with single crochet in the round (for the body and hat) and single crochet in rows (for the beard). His little ears are made using a bobble stitch but full instructions for the two bobble stitches are included in the pattern.

Instructions to make the gift box are also included in the pattern - it's seamless but constructed in a way that reinforces its cube shape. It's all single crochet in the round but you have to be comfortable with stitch and fabric anatomy as you will be crocheting rows together. The "ribbon" around the gift box is surface crocheted slip stitches.

To complete this pattern, you’ll need:

    • DK weight yarn in your choice of colours (I used grey, skin tone, red, white and green)
    • Size D (3.25mm) crochet hook
    • 6mm black safety eyes
    • polyester (or other) stuffing
    • yarn needle
